Spring Cleaning with Feng Shui

spring cleaning with feng shui

Feng Shui spring cleaning, wake up your home and your life!

The weather is warming up, and the days are getting longer.  Here in Minnesota, the winter has been unseasonably warm, and we had very little snow.  But the days are still dark and it is cold and dreary out.  I am ready for the sun’s warmth and yang energy to fill my home!

What do yin and yang mean in Feng Shui?  Yin is the quiet, slower chi or energy that you associate with the winter months, darker objects, and quiet locations.  Yang is fast-moving energy; think of brightly colored objects, busy businesses, and the season of Summer.

The Spring Equinox is March 19, the equinox astronomically marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  The equinox marks the two times of the year when the day and night are equally balanced.  This is a time when we move from the dreary dark yin chi creating balance with the sun’s active yang chi.  With all the plants coming out of their hibernation, the buds and flowers begin to pop, filling the air with their fragrance and vivid colors.  Spring is naturally a time of growth and expansion.

Are you feeling this change of energy?  Then embrace it for some Feng Shui Spring Cleaning!

Try these three things to tap into that yang chi, and you will feel a shift in not only your home but your life!

1 – Open up, repair, and clean the windows

In Feng Shui, the windows represent the eyes and mouths of the individuals in the home.

Dirty, nonfunctioning, or blocked windows can affect your ability to see and communicate with the world.  Grab your vinegar and water and clean those windows.  If you have any that don’t work, this is the perfect time to repair them.

Once you have completed the repairs and cleaning, open all of them up!  Let the yang chi fill your home energizing you and your space.  I have found during consultations many people talk about feeling down or closed off from the world.  But with the simple change of opening the blinds and the windows, they feel a significant shift.

What if you have a nonfunctioning window? This could mean you are feeling stuck, or you just can’t see yourself moving forward in your life.  This is a great time to make those repairs; you will be surprised how quickly things will change.

2 – Wash your front door and clean your foyer.

In Feng Shui, your front door is what welcomes opportunities.  We consider the front door the mouth of the chi coming into the home.  Spring is the perfect time to ensure this space is clear and welcoming.  Wash your front door with warm water and a couple of drops of basil oil, basil attracts prosperity!  Deep clean your foyer ensuring your front door opens entirely and you are not closing off opportunities.  Shake out your entry rugs and if you can, hang them outside to freshen them up.  Don’t forget to give your front stoop some love, sweep and even put down a new welcome mat.

When the cleaning is complete, stand on your front porch with a dash of cinnamon in your palm and blow it off to the world welcoming all that positive chi into your home!

You are cleaning this space for not only welcoming guests, opportunities, but you.  You come in and out of this space everyday and you want it to feel good, a space that envelopes you and welcomes you in!

3 – Freshen Up Your Plants

Spring is a Wood energy in Feng Shui, a time of rebirth and growth.  In Feng Shui, we follow the elemental cycle of the Five Elements.  The Five Elements in Feng Shui are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal.  Each element is associated with a time of year. Spring is the perfect time to embrace the energy of growth.  Plants can be symbolic of your life.  Are your plants root-bound and need a new pot so they can expand and grow?  I had one client repot her root-bound plants, and suddenly, she received new job opportunities; Feng Shui is amazing!

Spring is the perfect time for repotting, clean all the leaves, then shower your plants with love, and watch them, you and your family grow!

Feng Shui is so much more than just moving the furniture around, it is about tapping into the energy of your environment to create the life you desire.
