Palo Santo

When you walk into a yoga studio, stop and take in the wonderful aroma.  Typically, that calming scent is Palo Santo.  

What is the Mystical Palo Santo?  Palo Santo is Spanish for Holy Wood, originating off the coast of South America. Palo Santo is one of nature’s beautiful tools for raising vibrations, purifying, and cleansing your space.  

Palo Santo is considered part of the citrus family and brings a beautiful aromatic woody smell with hints of pine, lemon, and mint that can bring peace, calm, and clarity to a situation or place.  

Palo Santo has other mystical cousins such as Frankincense, Myrrh, and Copal. Palo Santo is a deeply sacred and spiritual tree, possessing a cleansing energy and healing properties similar to Sage and Cedar.

Palo Santo uses

I do this ritual every morning.  I find it grounds me and clears my head for the day.  I have a two story and typically do my main level.  As I use walk through my home I use a small bell gently ringing the bell in each rooms lifting the vibration.  My home feels wonderful and I love hearing guests mention how good my home smells and feels (even with two large dogs!).

Clears your space by raising the vibration and bringing a sense of calm.

Creates a pleasant fresh smoke helping keep mosquitoes and other flying insects at bay.

Enhances creativity.

May bring good fortune to those who are open to its wondrous ways.

Can be used to cleanse your crystals.

Clear a space for meditation and prepare you by calming your senses.

Can as an air freshener replacing chemicals.

Used for its ability to calm the immune and nervous systems. This aids in the recovery from ailments and illnesses.

Traditionally Palo Santo was used to relieve the common cold and flu, stress, asthma, headaches, depression, anxiety, and inflammation.

Prepare

  • Carefully light a stick of Palo Santo.
  • Set your intention.
  • Allow the Palo Santo stick to burn for 30 seconds to one minute, then carefully blowing it out.

Clear and recharge

  • Move counterclockwise through the space you wish to clear the energy, allow the smoke to float, filling each area.  
  • When cleansing your entire home, start at your front door and work around your home, moving to the left.
  • State your intention either out loud or in your mind as you move through your rooms. Your intention can be whatever you are wishing for the Palo Santo to do, be it clearing negative energy and raising vibration, clearing the space for easy breathing, etc. An example intention: “I ask that the Palo Santo to please infuse this space with blessings clearing the negative energy and opening the space to full and vibrant energy. Thank you.”

  • The rich and wonderful smell of Palo Santo will fill the air, bringing peace and clarity to the space and you. 
  • Use your intuition, once you feel your space is clear, place your Palo Santo stick in a fireproof container and allow the embers to burn out.
  • Always exercise caution when working with fire.
